How Psyra handles safety

Psyra is an AI for psychological support and self-reflection, for adults only. It is not a therapist, not a medical service and not an emergency service. This page explains what Psyra does when someone may be at risk, and what it cannot do.

What Psyra is, and is not

  • Psyra is an AI. It is not a person, a psychologist or a therapist.
  • Psyra is for adults only.
  • Psyra is not an emergency service. It cannot call emergency services or contact anyone for you.

How a risk is detected

Every message, written or spoken, is checked by an AI safety classifier before Psyra replies. It reads the meaning of the message in any language, not a list of keywords.

The check looks for thoughts of suicide or self-harm, a risk of serious harm to another person, abuse or violence the person is living through, and a medical emergency in progress.

A panic episode is recognised separately. Psyra helps you settle and does not trigger an emergency response.

If the check cannot finish in time, Psyra still replies with care, reads the message herself, and has the lines for your country ready in case they are needed.

What happens when a concern is raised

  • Psyra stays in the conversation. She does not hand you off and leave.
  • She offers support lines and emergency numbers for your country. A country you have saved is used first; otherwise, the country your connection comes from.
  • If you have written a safety plan, it is shown to you in the conversation.
  • She never gives methods and never presents herself as an emergency service.
  • Crisis support is never held back by your plan or a quota: a message that raises a safety concern is answered in full.
  • A conversation in which a safety concern was raised is not closed by the inactivity timer until at least a day after your last message.

Your choices

  • Save the country whose support lines you want to see, in your settings.
  • Keep and update your safety plan.
  • Export or delete your data from your profile.

What the check cannot do

  • The classifier can miss a risk, and it can flag a message that was not one. Its answers are not a diagnosis.
  • Psyra cannot call emergency services, know where you are, or contact anyone for you.
  • If you are in danger, call your local emergency number now: 112 in Europe, 911 in the United States, 3114 in France. In the United States you can also call or text 988 for suicidal distress.
